~ Face to Face ~
Read: Revelation 22:1-5
1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
"They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. Revelation 22:4 (NIV)
On our first vacation together, my wife and I drove hundreds of miles to visit the Black Hills of South Dakota. We had compiled a list of scenic and historic sites we wanted to see; at the top was Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. Since childhood we had seen pictures of the four U.S. presidents' faces that are cared into the mountainside. To view this in person would be a thrill.
Early in the afternoon, from the visitors center we gazed in wonder at the astounding sculpture. However, moments after we arrived, thick clouds rolled in and completely obscured what we had driven so far to see. Although we felt fortunate to have seen the faces, we were disappointed that they disappeared from our sight so quickly. We had wanted a much longer look.
The Book of Revelation tells of a coming day when the redeemed "will see his face." In eternity, we shall live forever in our Lord's presence, never to be separated. Unlike our experience in the Black Hills, our seeing the Lord will last forever, that image etched in our hearts always.
Prayer: Dear God of hope, we look forward to the moment when we shall see you face to face. As we await that day, help us to love generously, speak truthfully, and serve faithfully. Amen.
Prayer Focus of Day: Those recently married
Thought for the Day: One day, by God's grace, we shall see Christ face to face.
