To have a bitter sorrow for sin
Joe 2:13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
Rend' in this verse means, to have a bitter sorrow for sin. Here the Lord is speaking His Word unto Joel a message for His people. He says, rend your heart, and not your garments'. It's not our outward appearance that the Lord looks at. It's the heart that He searches and looks deep into.
1Sam.16:7, for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
