If I Love

If I love
only when it is convenient
have I truly loved?
If I love
only when it is reciprocated
have I truly loved?
If I love
only those who have not
broken my heart
then I wonder
have I truly loved?
Most days
it just seems
so difficult
for there is this
dilating crack
through the middle
of me
and I desire
the easy way out
because love
with conditions
seems like sweet simplicity
as well as love
that I don't give
at all
But if I love
only when I can
gain from it
have I truly loved?
If I love
only when there is
not pain
in the midst of it
have I truly loved?
If I love
only when it hasn't
torn me apart
have I then
truly loved?
If I love
without mercy
and I refuse to forgive
have I truly loved?
If I love
based on standards
that the Bible
would impeach
then have I truly loved?
If I love
in my own strength
with these small offerings
have I truly loved?
If I love
in this way
then I will wonder
this much
What do I know
of Jesus
if this is
how I love?
"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with eachother and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all the virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity." -Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)
