Bleeding skies

June the tenth the night the skies bled,
painting the sky a deep blood red
Ash poured down onto the lake
taking the terraces in its wake
The earth grumbled from beneath
looking at the ash it was hard to tell there was a town underneath
Just days after the ghostly sight
Many new angels take flight
so many dead, so many lost
Shelter came at a hard earned cost
Lifting their eyes to God on high,
Below mount Tarawera, beneath bleeding skies

For those who are not new zealanders here, which is the majority of you, this poem refers to the Mount Tarawera eruption. On the night of june the tenth, several years ago, Mount Tarawera erupted. Beneath mt tarawera was a tourist town, mostly maori, but with english tourists. "Ghostly sight" refers to a so called sign the eruption was coming by a maori man who proclaimed doom. A ghost waka (canoe) filled with maori warriors was seen on the lake, when tourists were being taken to see the famous pink and white terraces, which were destroyed in the eruption. Many people were killed in the eruption, and that night 62 people crowded into the whare (HOUSE) of guide sophia, for safety from the eruption. All 62 survived, but many others did not.
