Calling ALL Cooks!! HELP!

Postby Lani » Sun Aug 19, 2012 2:34 pm

Howdy O Family!!! *Wave*

Ok so who says a lil competition is a bad thing? *Clap* Every year at our end of summer town gathering, we have a cooking ‘contest’. Everyone has to bring a covered dish. It can be ANYTHING, main dish, side dish, appetizer, dessert, you get the picture :)

The problem is… After 11 years, I am out of ideas!!!!

Ok, I was out of ideas last year but submitted my classic chili with kicked up special Secret ingredient from Mack’s chili recipe (separate Chili contest at gathering) and won 1st place! Ask her about it :) mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! I raised eyebrow, kid ya not but once I tried it… I was hooked! :D Woot!

Oh, wait.. back to my point :D

I need your HELP!!!!

What sorts of things do you bring to such events (competition aside) lol

Please share your Recipes!!! Those shared will be considered for my item to take along this year and will be added to the Oasis cookbook too!

Peace n Luv in Christ,
*BlessYou* Lani

I like to cook and people rave about my cooking - but I still don't like taking things to carry-ins and frequently cop out with a relish tray. Actually, deviled eggs go over very well almost all the time. I did nothing but deviled eggs or relish tray with deviled eggs for years because everything disappeared. It is so disheartening when other people don't like your favorite. I have taken my guacamole - which is unusual and yes I will share if you ask - and had people absolutely fall over themselves gushing. At church, nobody hardly touched it. Weird and green I guess.

In the last couple of years, I have been taking zucchini muffins. I've seen little kids getting seconds. Also will share if you ask.

Be careful with your crockpots and chilis - the spills can give severe burns. Don't just carry it propped between your legs in the car.

Queso can go over well with the right crowd. I think that is salsa, the block cheese with jalapenos in it (Velveeta Mexican or Queso blanca with jalapenos) and canned chili - or a cup of your own. Experiment and see how you like it. Add a little milk. My daughter is great with it - I have only been adequate to kinda good. lol. I make excellent nachos at home, but they wouldn't transport well. Also true of my fajitas and cobbler.....

Good luck. (Think you might be an over achiever.) hugs.
Hugs,
Dema

Howdy Dema :)

Thanks Much for the reply!!!

I'd love to have both recipes, if/when you have time to share such :) I've always wanted to try to make zuchini bread (never thought of muffins but now I am curious!). My gram had a wonderful recipe for it but never did get aroud to writting it down and I have found that with such ingredients, there is an art... I'd not trust a random online link for it cuz dry zuchini bread is ick!

And mmmmmmmmmm guacamole is YUM! now I want some chips! lol

*hug*

Thanks again!!!

I'm a pitch and toss cook.

Guacamole - use the black (dark green) avocados with the bumps - not the smooth ones.

Three avocados
juice from half a lemon
finely chopped onion (probably two Tbsp - but I don't measure)
2-3 TBSP Helmann's or other real mayonnaise
2-3 TBSP Miracle whip. (You can use all Miracle Whip, but not vice versa)
2-3 TBSP salsa.

Use a mixer to mix it smooth.

Put the pit in it to keep it from turning dark. All measurements are approximate. After you taste it the first time, you can figure out the adjustments you want to make. It is pretty forgiving.

I found the muffins on the site - it is in New Posts. Feel free to discard this silly business after you get the recipe. Have fun.

Hi *Wave* I made cheeseballs and craisin fruitballs for my sons wedding. I also made a spinach dip all were eaten up and I had to give out the recipe several times. I'll post so you might wanna try them as appitiezers. My mom has a great recipe for squash dressing and zukinni bread. My dad is a diabetic and he eats the zukinni bread as a dessert it is so good. I would be glad to share it. Just let me know.
