OBEY THE CALL

Mark 1:16-20

I read about Captain Ray Baker who flew for the Strategic Air Command during the Vietnam War. The Air Force trained him, along with the other pilots, to run out of their barracks to their planes at the sound of a buzzer. Many times during dinner he had to drop his utensils and bolt to his bomber. He had been trained to respond to the call with immediate obedience. He was so well-trained that one day while on furlough, he ran out of a restaurant when he heard a buzzer.

When Jesus called His first followers, they had an immediacy in their response to His call. The call of these fishermen was abrupt. Yet "they immediately left their nets and followed Him" (Mark 1:18). The author of this account, Mark, may have wanted to impress upon his readers the authority of Jesus. When He extended the call, these men jumped to obey because helping people enter the kingdom of God was a more compelling adventure and a grander vision than catching fish.

When Jesus issues a call to follow Him, He doesn't want us to delay. He expects immediate obedience when it comes to telling others the good news. Bring someone the story of salvation today! __Marvin Williams

*************Today's Bible Reading __ Mark 1:16-20**************

16 And as He walked by the
Sea of Galilee, He saw
Simon and Andrew his
brother casting a net into the
sea; for they were fishermen.

17 Then Jesus said to them,
"Follow Me, and I will
make you become fishers of
men." 18 They immediately
left their nets and followed
Him. 19 When He had gone a
little farther from there, He
saw James the son of
Zebedee, and John his
brother, who also were in
the boat mending their nets.

20 And immediately He
called them, and they left
their father Zebedee in the
boat with the hired servants,
and went after Him.

Mark 1 does not record the first meeting Peter and his brother
Andrew had with Jesus. The two had met the Lord earlier (John 1:35-
42). Jesus chose the two along with 10 others from among His many
followers (Mark 3:7-8) for the office of apostleship (Matt. 10:1-4;
Luke 6:13-16). Mark tells us that the Lord "called to Him those He
Himself wanted...that they might be with Him and that He might
send them out to preach" (Mark 3:13-14). After Jesus' resurrection,
they were given their final mission, a co-mission with Jesus--the
Great Commission (Matt.28:19-20); Mark 16:15; Luke 24:47-48;
John 20:21; Acts 1:8).

OBEYING THE CALL

Postby Daisy50 » Sat Oct 02, 2010 8:59 am

Great lesson!

I had been looking for a way to "obey the call" when one day I thought "why not use my Facebook page to reach out and post the wonderful 'things' the Lord has done in my life....Every person I have as a 'friend', each of them have friends....My posts can go worldwide.

And so it has. So many who post on my Facebook page are now posting about the changes they're seeing in their lives, praising and giving thanks to Our Heavenly Father.

Sometimes, the internet can be a pain. But in this circumstance, it has truely been a blessing. We're casting our 'nets' out to the world wide web circle and boy, what great stories I have read of what Our Father has done for all of us. Thank You Jesus \0/

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
