What's on your to-do list today? Cleaning out an overstuffed closet? Calculating a financial report at work? Paying your monthly bills?

We all have things we need to get done today, whether we've written them down or not. They're important for us to accomplish.

While a to-do list is helpful, another type of list is even more valuable: a "to be" list. Albert Einstein said, "Try not to become a man of success but rather to beocme a man of value."

The apostle Paul encouraged the Galatian believers, and now tells us, to be concerned with our character. He said that if we're controlled by the Holy Spirit, God will produce in us the characteristics of "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control" (5:22-23).

As you look at those character traits, which are you needing most in your life? More patience with a co-worker or a child? A little more gentleness and kindness toward a neighbor? As you draw near to God, He will enable you to be the person He wants you to be.

Perhaps at the top of your to-do list today you could put: Spend time praying and reading God's word. That would be a good start in helping with your "to be" list. __Anne Cetas

***************Today's Bible Reading __ Galatians 5:16-26**********

16 I say then: Walk in the
Spirit, and you shall not
fulfill the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusts against
the Spirit, and the Spirit
against the flesh; and these
are contrary to one another,
so that you do not do the
things that you wish. 18 But
if you are led by the Spirit,
you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the
flesh are evident, which
are : adultery, fornication,
uncleanness, lewdness,

20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred
contentions, jealousies,
outbursts of wrath, selfish
ambitions, dissensions,
heresies, 21 envy, murders,
drunkeness, revelries, and
the like; of which I tell you
beforehand, just as I also
told you in time past, that
those who practice such
things will not inherit the
kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the
Spirit is love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, kindness,
goodnes,, faithfulness,

23 gentleness, self-control.
Against such there is no
law. 24 And those who are
Christ's have crucified
the flesh with its passions
and desires. 25 If we live
in the Spirit, let us also
walk in the Spirit. 26 Let
us not become conceited,
provoking one another,
envying one another.

In Galatians, Paul wrote to a group of believers who struggled
with a life filled with grace and based on faith. As a result, they
were constantly seeking to validate their spiritual lives through
human effort. This makes Paul's terminology in today's Bible reading
significant. He calls the results of our energies "the works of the
flesh" (v.19)--displaying evidence that is decidedly negative. The
fruit of what the Spirit can do in us, however, is the foundation of
Christian character (vv.22-23). __WEC
