~ God’s Masterpiece ~

Matthew 5:14-16
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.



We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepares in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)


Several years ago I toured an art museum that was featuring a special exhibit on the works of the French Impressionist painters. Up close, the individual brush strokes and masses of blues, reds, and yellows seemed to be producing nothing recognizable. But when I stepped back a few paces, my eyes blended the rich colors together to show me scenes of gardens, parks, seacoasts, and cities in vibrant light.

In some ways, our lives are like those paintings. Up close, events can form a confusing mix of difficult times and successful moments. But when we “step back a few paces,” we can gain perspective and see important lessons we learned during the hard times, making the joyful times even more special.

This helps me understand Romans 8:28 in a new way: “All things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose” (NRSV). Our love for God and for others is perfect when we allow God to guide us on our journey. Slowly, beautiful works of art emerge, each one painted by the hand of the greatest Artist of all.



Prayer: Thank you, God, for creating us to be your masterpieces. Help us to light up the lives of others with your love. Amen
