~ Jesus Understands ~

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

“Where have you laid him?” [Jesus] asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. Jesus wept. John 11:34-35 (NIV)

I moved away from home to work in the city, which was a two-hour journey by car from where my parents lived. I visited them only every three months, but we were constantly in contact via telephone.

I was asleep in my new home, when around 3:00 in the morning, I received a telephone call from my dad. His voice was broken and tremulous as he told me my mother had died.
“What?” I reacted. Only last week I was speaking to my mum, catching up on news, laughing and talking. How could she just go – without my having a chance to say good bye or tell her I loved her? The news was unexpected, and I was in a state of disbelief. The whole situation seemed unreal.

But family and friends surrounded me. We comforted each other through our tears.

Jesus showed us that grief is natural. The Bible tells us that when his friend Lazarus died, Jesus wept. My mum wasn’t raised as Lazarus was; but because she had given her life to Christ, I know that she will be raised to new life on the day of resurrection.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for being with us in times of loss. Help us to sense your presence and comfort in every situation. Amen.

Prayer Focus of Day: Those who have lost a loved one.

Thought for the Day: Christ understands our grief and shares it.
