James 1:1-4

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones. Psalm 116:15

The message said to call; I knew it would be news that I did not want to hear – our loved one had died.
We were sad, angry, and simply didn't understand. Although we had thought she might not win her battle, her death didn't make sense. Why her? She was strong, vibrant and young – only 36 years old.

During her illness, I kept turning to the Book of James and the Book of Job. James teaches us about trials in our life; Job was a man who faced great loss and yet trusted God. The first chapter of James says, “Whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.” (verse 2-3)

In times of grief, it's easy to ask why. But as I though more about my family's loss, I began to think of the many blessings God has given us. I realized that what matters is loving on another in whatever time we have. Our loved one was ready to meet God; her relationship with the Lord was strong. That knowledge gave our family peace – and even joy – in spite of our loss.

Prayer: Dear God, in times of grief help us to lean on your word. Strengthen us to know what is most important – our relationship with you. Amen.
