1 Peter 4:8-11
8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
9 Use hospitality one to another without grudging.
10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Jesus said, "Who is greater, the one who is as the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves." Luke 22:27

After exploratory surgery, doctors concluded that my mother's sister, Dora, had a tumor in her stomach. Mom and I traveled to be with Dora and the family when surgery was performed to remove the tumor.

Later, after my aunt was settled in at home, family members took care of her, each with designated responsibilities. Mom's responsibility was praying with Aunt Dora and making her breakfast. When Mom wasn't up to doing that, I began to help.

One morning as I was preparing my aunt's breakfast, I suddenly began to realize what Jesus meant by his words in Luke 22:27, to understand this scripture not just with my head but with my heart. I saw that we are to serve with a loving attitude. I admit that on the days I made Dora's breakfast, it wasn't always willingly. But I worked through that attitude by remembering that Jesus probably had times when he was weary and yet served those in need. He is my servant role model. Now I understand that true greatness is shown in committed service to others.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to serve those in need, those you send to us. Help us always to serve with a loving hearts. Amen

Prayer Focus of Day:Those recovering after surgery

Thought for the Day:The great ones in God's kingdom are those who serve.
