On the southern shores of England is Slapton Sands. This beautiful beach area carries a tragic memory from its past.

On April 28, 1944, during World War 2, allied soldiers were engaged in Operation Tiger, a training exercise in amphibious beach landings in preparation for the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Suddenly, enemy gun-boats appeared and killed over 700 American servicemen in a surprise attack. Today, a monument stands on Slapton Sands to commemorate the sacrifice of those young men who died while training for battle but were never able to enter the conflict.

This tragedy is a metaphor that warns the believer in Christ. We too are involved in combat with an enemy who is powerful and deceptive. That is why the apostle Peter warned: "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8).

Like the soldiers on Slapton Sands, we face an enemy who desires our undoing. In the service of our King, we must be on the alert. The call to be effective in battle (2 Tim. 2:3-4) challenges us to be ready for the surprise attacks of our spiritual enemy--so that we can endure to serve another day. __Bill Crowder

**************Today's Bible Reading __ 1 Peter 5:1-11*************

1 The elders who are among
you I exhort, I who am a
fellow elder and a witness of
the sufferings of christ, and
also a partaker of the glory
that will be revealed:

2 Shepherd the flock of God
which is among you, serving
as overseers, not by
compulsion but willingly, not
for dishonest gain but
eagerly; 3 nor as being lords
over those entrusted to you,
but being examples to the
flock; 4 and when the Chief
Shepherd appears, you will
receive the crown of glory
that does not fade away.

5 Likewise you younger
people, submit yourselves to
your elders. Yes, all of you
be submissive to one
another, and be clothed with
humility, for "God resists the
proud, but gives grace to the
humble." 6 Therefore humble
yourselves under the mighty
hand of God, that He may
exalt you in due time.

7 casting all your care upon
Him, for He cares for you.

8 Be sober, be vigilant;
because your adversary the
devil walks about like a
roaring lion, seeking whom
he may devour. 9 Resist him,
steadfast in the faith,
knowing that the same
sufferings are experienced
by your brotherhood in the
world.

10 But may the God of all
grace, who called us to His
eternal glory by Christ Jesus,
after you have suffered a
while, perfect, establish,
strengthen, and settle you.

11 To Him be the glory and
the dominion forever and
ever. Amen.

When Peter warned that the devil was like a roaring and devouring
lion (v.8), he was writing from his own deep, painful experiences.
Some 30 years earlier, the self-assured and overconfident Peter
failed to "watch and pray" (Matt. 26:34-35,41). He was "devoured"
by the devil (v.75). Sim Kay Tee
