~ The Place of Understanding ~

Psalm 119:97-104
97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.
98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.
101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.
102 I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.
103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell?... God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells. Job 28:20, 23 (NIV)

I can read the same book four times. I read first for the story, the second time for the way it was written, the third time to see if the story is as good as I remembered and the fourth to find out if it is written as well as I remembered.

My husband, Michael, rarely wants to read a book twice. He says that this is one reason he has trouble getting something out of the Bible when he reads it daily. He has read the same scripture before, so his mind shuts off. He reaches the end of a chapter and discovers that he does not remember a single word.

Even though I don’t mind rereading what I’ve read before I am often too preoccupied with my daughters, the house, finances, or another book I am reading to get to the Bible. Reading it every day is difficult.

Together, Michael and I have found a way to read the Bible more diligently. We ask, “What is new in the passage we read?” No matter what need the scripture might have addressed a year ago, our needs have changed. We discover a thought for today. With this approach, we find in the Bible fresh truth and wise guidance.

Prayer: Our Father, speak through the words of the Bible and help us to see how to apply their truth daily. Amen

Prayer Focus of Day: Literacy Workers

Thought for the Day: God’s word always offers a fresh message.
