Psalms 121: 1-8
1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

You have granted [the king] the desire of his heart and have not withheld the request of his lips... You welcomed him with rich blessings and placed a crown of pure gold on his head. Psalm 21:2-3 (NIV)

September 2005, I was going through the departure gate at the airport in Holguin, Cuba. As the doors closed behind me, I was overcome by deep loneliness and despair. I was leaving behind my family, my home, and my country, and I didn't know when I would see any of them again.

Seated and waiting in the passenger lounge, I felt such a great weight on me that I could barely move. In my hands, I held my Bible. I opened it, and my eyes fell on Psalm 21:2-3. I had read those verses on other occasions, but on that day it was as if I could hear God's voice saying the words of the psalm. They resounded in my ears in a new way, as a personal message from God to me. God would surely be with my family and with me, and God was sending me on my way with blessing. The weight I had felt earlier seemed to disappear; my energy was restored, and I was filled with confidence.

Two years later I was reunited with my family. I discovered once again that God's tender mercies reach us wherever we are and in whatever situation we may find ourselves.
