Understanding the Unpardonable Sin

The unpardonable sin is a subject most seminaries and ministers won't touch simply because they lack the knowledge and experience that accompanies spiritual growth that leads to understanding it. My purpose in writing this article is to touch those that feel condemned often and fear they have already committed the unpardonable sin. I will prove to all that read this that you have nothing to fear, that you have not committed the unpardonable sin, and teach you how to get yourself free of condemnation.
There are several scriptures that deal with the unpardonable sin that are scattered throughout the Bible. As I have mentioned before...the Bible is thematic. It has several themes that are introduced in the Old Testament that are then gradually touched upon until the theme is completed. Isaiah 28: [9] Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
[10] For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
Please notice the phrase weaned from the milk...This article isn't milk. This article is meat. But I will make you able to accept it and understand it by grinding up the meat and mixing it with milk. I must admit that I was still quite the baby when I was introduced to the reality of there being an unpardonable sin, and I cried and cried and cried because I wasn't ready for meat and the way the teaching was presented hurt me more than it helped me. I do not want that to be the case for any of you so I will present the material herein in a way so you can bear it.

Let's take a look at the beginning issues and ending issues surrounding the unpardonable sin first. We begin with the serpent in the Garden of Eden. It tempted Adam and Eve to have something better than that which God gave to them. They can be like God they are told if they will but eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. They believe the lie and die. That is, where once they were unashamed, content, and happy in the presence of God, now they fear Him, and flee at His voice. They have sinned unto death, and at that time there wasn't a remedy for their transgression.

Just as a side note I would like for you to understand that there is no other like God, for He has declared the end from the beginning.

Next we go to the Book of Revelation. There we find a great mass of people facing the same form of temptation Adam and Eve were confronted with. The temptation of course is to believe a lie. The lie of course comes from the devil or son of perdition himself. Now the lie of the serpent in the Garden of Eden, and the lie of the devil in the Book of Revelation are essentially the same thing. It is essentially this. People exchange the truth for a lie and understand that in so doing they are changing sides during a war. They become traitors, evil renegades from the Kingdom of God. They willingly let an evil spirit enter them and control them. They are essentially criminals worthy only of execution for they are no longer good for anything but to do evil.
Of course such wasn't the end of the matter for Adam and Eve. The remedy for their condition was far down the road, but God showed them mercy by only driving them out of the Garden of Eden. But such will not be the case for those that reject the Spirit of God in favor of obtaining a spirit of the devil at the time of the end. They will have complete knowledge of what their action means. It means they will have a deep seated, quite profound, and fierce hatred of God beyond what any of us can imagine for the most part at this time, so much so they accept the lie of the devil as being good and true, and call our Father, our Lord, and the Holy Spirit He has given us evil, and His Word a lie.

Consider this. Adam and Eve became afraid of God and He drove them out of His garden. But consider those that give away their soul at the time of the end.

Rev.6
[15] And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
[16] And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
[17] For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Their fear is beyond what we can imagine at this time. Of course we mess up and fear we've fallen from grace, or suffer the dark night of the soul where there just seems to be a dark cloud over our head that we can't get rid of. And some of us come to feel as though we have committed the unpardonable sin, or sinned so much our Lord can’t ever forgive us...but such simply is not true. God's great grace, and mercy, and forgiveness, and cleansing will reign in you life as long as you will but only seek His blessing and receive it.
In truth those of us that seem to have continual problems in the flesh have a rough go of it where our conscience is concerned, but such is not reason to cast away our faith. Faith calls things that are not as though they are. The grace of God is much much mightier than sin, so we walk on in grace by faith to our last breath no matter what!! Please understand there is a vast, vast, vast difference between our weakness in the faith from time to time, bad habit problems, and having a hatred of God so profound it defies reason!! Here are some scriptures that explain why we must continue in the faith.
Heb.12
[1] Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
Even though our body is dead to sin from time to time, our tendency can be to get involved in the world too much, get upset and angry too often, fail to forgive each and every time we feel insulted, return to a bad habit, quit loving God and our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, and so on and so forth. But there is a remedy for that called confession by our faith in God that He honors His word in 1John 1:9, forgive us and cleanse us of all unrighteousness. My purpose in presenting Heb.12:1 to you above was not to weight you down with a problem you can't solve on your own, but point out that things we do weight us down from time to time, and we sin from time to time, and if we say we have no sin we are just fooling ourselves. It is still in us to some degree until we are made perfect in love, and when we mess up the light of God goes out and we fall into darkness. But such things are normal for us. We mess up, and even if we backslide, we still have the right to repent, and God is faithful and just to forgive us and clean us up according to His word. Even if we get beat down and backslide several miles as in us being so unhappy we tell our Lord to go away, He will forgive us and clean us up....as long as we aren't spiritually mature in the manner I explain below.

[31] Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men:

[9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Jas.5
[16] Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Rom.14
[22] Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
1Cor.6
[12] All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

[23] All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
Rom.5
[16] And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.[18] Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
I understand that some of you might be asking the question. "What is Saint really saying to us here?" I'm saying that there is more room for us to live in grace than there is to die by sin. Let's say for example that I buy a 6 pack of beer every Friday night and every Friday night I condemn myself for drinking that 6 pack of beer. And I don't even drink the 6 pack of beer all in the same night. Let's say I drink 3 on Friday evening, and 3 Saturday evening, yet still I condemn myself because I believe as a Christian it is not lawful from me to do so. Am I doing right by condemning myself for doing that which I allow myself to do? Well, if I am, I am opposing myself. Which does the greater damage, drinking the beer or opposing myself? Why not rather have faith to drink the beer, that it is lawful for you to do so because you are at least 21 and how can He that made wine condemn you that drink beer? Drink that beer in faith. Enjoy it. Just don't overdo it.
What I'm say is this..you have much more room to sin and recover from it according to the Word of God than you do to die again from it. However, since this article is about the unpardonable sin, we need to see just how far a person has to go before that person is lost forever.
Heb.6
[4] For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
[5] And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
[6] If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
I will begin with the subject of enlightenment first just as the Apostle Paul did. Most really do not even understand what it is to become enlightened at all. First I will tell you what it isn't. It isn't just that hunger for the Word of God that comes to you when first you believe in God. And one cannot enlighten oneself by studying the Bible either. Nor is the rudimentary teachings given us by the Holy Spirit when we are still babes in the Lord being enlightened either. For one to qualify as being enlightened God the Father Himself must give you His Spirit of Wisdom and Knowledge in the Revelation of Him. God Himself imparts part of Himself inside you in the form of His Word which is Christ Jesus our Lord. We quickly learn there is someone else in there with our soul and that someone is God. After God gave me His Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation in the knowledge of Him the eyes of my understand became enlightened and I understood things in the Bible that had remained mysteries to me before. In other words, I began tasting the good word of God.
Each morning the Spirit of the Lord would wake me up and show me more and more about how certain scriptures in different places were related to each other. The enlightening process went on for a year and a half for me, and I still see and understand new revelations God gives me from time to time. Here is an example of an enlightening I received this morning.
1John.2
[13] I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning.
[14] I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning.

I know and have known Him that is from the beginning. That makes me a father. Now the enlightening process began with me in April 2009, but the Lord kept that insight of His from me until now. I have learned that there is little point in speculating why God does this or that. Insight comes to us as He wills. And we can’t do anything without Him. I wouldn’t be writing this article if I didn’t know it was God’s will and that He was working with me in the writing of it for your benefit and His good pleasure.
With the enlightening come the Heavenly gifts of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. In essence, once we have become enlightened we have tasted the good word of God. We also understand the Holy Ghost is living in us and know His leading and voice. We abide in Christ, and His words abide in us. With enlightening comes the taste of the good Word of God. Perhaps Prov.4 vs. 20-22 says it best.
Prov.4
[20] My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. [21] Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. [22] For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
The good word of God is that He is the origin and perfect essence of love, and He is light, and there is not darkness in Him at all. He is the love to us discussed in 1Cor.13, and it is into that same love that He is making us.

Pss.34
[8] O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

I know the life of God within me, His leadings, His teachings and it is much easier for me live a happy life. The Word of God is alive in me as a good thing. His living Word within me causes me to be spiritually minded which is always health and peace to us. (Rom.8 [6] For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.)
John.15:7 is part of my spiritual mindedness at this time. I ask what I will and it is done unto me. The benefit of that scripture is life and peace to me in many ways. For example, I trust in the Lord to keep me healthy as long as He will. When I feel a cold, or the flu or a toothache coming on I ask the Lord to take care of it and He does it unto me. I ask Him to remind me of things I need to do and He does. In many cases He shows me things I need to do before I ask for direction. There are many benefits of being spiritually minded...and if you aren't there yet, then keep believing, keep asking, knocking, and seeking. You gain nothing by quitting, so by patience and faith come to the working of His promises for you.
Paul addresses tasting the powers of the world to come last. Such is a tad difficult to describe. Paul said it this way. God can do in us far more than we can even imagine He can do. I have in fact tasted of the powers of the world to come. I have tasted two different types of those powers. The first taste was of God as fire within my soul. We become as the burning bush that was not consumed. How powerful was the fire within my soul? Or how hot was the fire within my soul...stove burner hot, and far more powerful than the fire of hell. Since I've experienced both I know that greater is He that lives within me than he that lives in the world. The fire of God drove away the fire of hell from me. That is a power that will belong to us in the world to come.
The second taste was of the great power in the Word of God, i.e. dunamis. That anointing within also resides in the soul and can be compared to the cracking of a bull whip each time an anointed word comes out of one’s mouth. The voice of the Holy Ghost spoken within us is difficult to describe, though. Each word He speaks is so filled with dunamis that it explodes within our soul. The power in His word is like the power of a lightning bolt when unleashed.
Once we have experienced and understood the meaning of those things listed above by Paul we become responsible for how we walk with God. It is at this point we clearly understand what is required of us and the mystery scripture few understand correctly applies to us. Here is what Paul said.
Phil.2
[12] Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
[13] For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
I trust that all who read this have believed in our Lord Jesus to be their savior and understand that Christ is living in our heart even though we many not recognize His presence in there very often or at all from time to time. But once mature spiritually we know that the Spirit and mind of Christ lives in us to will and to do. Now I don't literally shake in my boots all day long, but I carefully watch to see, understand, and do what our Lord requires of me to will and to do for His good pleasure. I am happiest when I know He is happy.
Such pretty much sums up the truth of the mature Christian life. We live to do the will of God, but it is He that is living His life through us. We have been called to a life of obedience, and we know our happiness is in making our Lord happy through our obedience.
And if we happen to be babes in Christ and yet know that we know our Heavenly Dad is leading us and we have already begun a life of obedience to God. Let us continue always in the way of life.

I must say that this can be summed up for the babes in Christ.

Matthew 12:31 Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.”

The unpardonable sin is the sin of rejection. The unpardonable sin is defined as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, because when Christ was on earth, the religious leaders were attributing his miracles to demonic powers when in fact they were the product of the Holy Spirit working in the life of Christ (Matt. 12:12-32). This demonstrated a heart that had become so hard that it precluded repentance because Christ’s words and works were a clear evidence of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in Him as the Anointed One, the Messiah of the Old Testament. To reject Christ and claim His works were from Satan was a clear evidence of both unbelief and an unrepentant heart. That’s why it was considered unpardonable.

The one sin that is unforgivable is unbelief or rejection of Christ.

Hi Real,

Many thanks for the outstanding summary you wrote. I agree with you whole heartedly that calling the works of God as of the devil is blasphemy, and that telling the Lord to leave us is the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit if we are of full age and know what we are doing. Those calling our Lord's works of the Holy Spirit those of Beelzebub were the masters of the Jewish religion at that time. They were without excuse because those masters knew what the good works of God were, the blind see, the lame walk, Elijah reviving one already dead..the cruz of oil and flower not failing, the cleansing of Naaman of Leprosy..and all the works of Moses. The were without excuse.

But there are many babes and children out there living out a life of condemnation because they believe they have sins that can't be forgiven, and that includes rejecting the Holy Spirit and His righteous works, and telling Him to go away. My point was this...babes and children of our Lord cannot commit the unpardonable sin because they are not of full age, and the proof of that is their limited spiritual experience and knowledge as attested to in Heb.6. I also wanted to get the point across that many that are living in condemnation need to let guilt go, live by faith, and receive forgiveness. The fastest way I know to get our from under a life of condemnation is to being right now walking in the love of God that forgives all and does good to their perceived enemies. If we walk like that the blood of Jesus will automatially cleanse us, and we will feel justified and at peace with God if we walk with Him in repect to who He is, the origin and essence of pure love. Walk in love with all and darkness cannot abide on you, nor can condemnation, because you are walking in the light as God is the source of the light that shines upon us when we love as He loves.
