Good Friday Bible Verse Explained

What is Good Friday and what does it represent?

Let us discuss the week of our Lord's Death and Resurrection. I want to share a Truth with you today. The feasts and celebrations which were holy days that the Israelites were told by God to honor each year were in fact ... Shadows of things to come:

Colossians 2:16-17

16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

In other words, God created these days of celebration or Holy days as a sign of future events that would occur at that specific date and time of year. Many awesome events have occurred on these Holy days just as these Feast shadows reflect and there are more to come. There is one in particular that I want to share with you today. It is the "Passover."

Leviticus 23:5

In the fourteenth day of the first month at evening is the LORD's Passover.

Exodus 12:3-6

3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

In this celebration, they were to bring in an unblemished lamb on the 10th day of the first month of the Jewish calendar and keep this lamb for 4 days. Then on the 14th day of the first month the Israelites would kill their lamb and place the Blood of the Lamb on their homes to save themselves. They were told to do this every year and was called Passover.

Let's take a little Christian Good Friday Bible study field trip ... You've probably heard of the story of the great Exodus from Egypt with Moses in the Book of Exodus. After God plagued the Egyptians many times for not allowing His people to be set free, He had one more plague that would prove to do the trick. Moses told the Jewish people that an angel of death would come and kill all the firstborn of Egypt. In order to protect their children, they were to place lamb's blood on their homes and the angel of death would pass over them. They were to bring an unblemished lamb on the 10th day of the 1st month of the Jewish calendar and keep this lamb for four days. Then on the 14th day of the month, the Israelites would kill the lamb and place the blood on their homes to save themselves. They were to do this every year.

This celebration was a shadow of an event to come ... Jesus' death.

Jesus was the Lamb without sin and came into Jerusalem on the 10th day of the 1st month (Palm Sunday) and was with the people for four days. He was killed by the Jewish people's choice on the 14th day of the month just as the Jewish people were celebrating Passover. Little did they know that His Blood, like the lamb's was for them many years ago, is now the saving Grace.

There is another Jewish celebration called "First Fruits" which is 3 days after Passover. The people would offer a he lamb without blemish as a sacrifice to God.

Leviticus 23:10-14

10 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest:
11 And he shall wave the sheaf before the Lord, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.
12 And ye shall offer that day when ye wave the sheaf an he lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering unto the Lord.
13 And the meat offering thereof shall be two tenth deals of fine flour mingled with oil, an offering made by fire unto the Lord for a sweet savour: and the drink offering thereof shall be of wine, the fourth part of an hin.
14 And ye shall eat neither bread, nor parched corn, nor green ears, until the selfsame day that ye have brought an offering unto your God: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

This celebration was a shadow of an event to come ... The day after the Sabbath (in Israel, the Sabbath is Saturday) so that would make it Sunday, the first day of the Jewish week and in Truth the first day on the American calendar.

Jesus (the He Lamb without blemish) was killed and He was resurrected on Sunday morning as our Sacrifice.

Here is a very important Christian Good Friday Bible study tidbit of truth ... God used Jesus as that sacrificial He Lamb because there were not enough sheep in all the world to atone for the sins.

Good Friday in the Bible Proof
Good Friday Bible Verse Quest

This brings us to another interesting fact.

The Jewish calendar day does not start at midnight but rather sunset. This begins the 12 hours of night hours and at sunrise it begins the 12 hours of day hours.

John 11:9

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? ...

Jesus died at the ninth hour of the day.

Mark 15:34-37

34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, He calleth Elias.
36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave Him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take Him down.
37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

... Making it about 3:00 pm ... A few hours before sunset, when our precious Lord died for our sins. We also know that Jesus was in the earth for 3 days and 3 nights.

Matthew 12:40

For as Jonas [Jonah] was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man [Jesus] be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

And resurrected on Sunday morning as the first day of the Jewish week is Sunday just as the American calendar begins on Sunday.

Mark 16:2

And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

The stone was found rolled away and the tomb empty on Sunday morning.

Do the math on these Christian Good Friday Bible study facts and this reveals that Jesus was killed on Thursday, not "Good Friday."

So ... Where did the phrase "Good Friday" come from?

Many believe that because the Jewish people asked that Jesus' crucified body be taken down from the cross because it would be "Sabbath" at sunset. (Sabbath is from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset.)

John 19:31

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

So the next day was a Sabbath day (a day of rest from work).

Good Friday in the Bible Holy Days
Christian Good Friday Outlined

However ... Did you notice that it said that this particular Sabbath was a "high" Sabbath day, meaning it was a special Sabbath. The Sabbath being spoken of is a special Sabbath that occurred the day after Passover.

Leviticus 23:6-7

6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the Lord: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.
7 In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.

According to the Christian Good Friday information ... The first day (the 15th day of the month) was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread and was a special Sabbath and at sunset it would have been this special Sabbath ... Not the weekly Sabbath.

The math on proving this Truth is simple ... Matthew reveals that Jesus was found missing the day after Sabbath.

Matthew 28:1

In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

Good Friday Countdown
Good Friday Bible Verse Math

How can it be then that they asked Jesus to be taken down from the cross on the day before Sabbath and His body was found missing the day after Sabbath when we know Jesus told us He would be in the earth 3 days and 3 nights?

Matthew 12:40

For as Jonas [Jonah] was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man [Jesus] be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Christian Good Friday Bible study trivia question ... If Jesus died on Friday and was found missing on Sunday morning ... How can one ever make that add up to 3 days and 3 nights?

Friday Night
Saturday Night
Sunday Night

The problem is that according to the Good Friday Bible verse Scripture ... Jesus was found missing Sunday morning. As I said, simple math ... Jesus died on the 14th day of the first month of the Jewish calendar just as every other Passover lamb being sacrificed to keep His people from death was.

Here is a little chart to make doing the math ... even easier!
